Richard Usatine, MD

Richard Usatine MDDr. Richard Usatine is the Medical Director of a Skin Clinic for the underserved in the UTHSCSA Department of Family and Community Medicine. He has been recognized throughout his career for bringing quality health care to underserved communities and teaching and mentoring student physicians to provide compassionate care to the underprivileged. He developed two student-run clinics in San Antonio with a group of UTHSCSA medical students to give students a chance to express their desire to serve their community.

Dr. Usatine received a B.A. in Chemistry from Williams College in 1978, graduating summa cum laude, and his MD from Columbia University before completing a Faculty Fellowship at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). During his residency at UCLA Family Medicine, he worked at the Venice Family Clinic, becoming the clinic's first full-time physician and helping it evolve into America's largest free clinic. Dr. Usatine remained at UCLA for 20 years in a variety of positions, the last as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Professor of Family Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. Among Dr. Usatine's numerous honors and awards is the 2000 Humanism in Medicine Education award, presented by the Association of American Medical Colleges. He received the UTHSCSA Family Medicine Residency Faculty Recognition Award in 2004 and the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006.

Written works and works in progress include Skin Surgery: A Practical Guide, Practical Allergy, Yoga Rx and The Color Atlas of Family Medicine. He is the editor-in-chief of the new Family Medicine Digital Resource Library found at fmdrl.org.
