Program Description: The University of Witwatersrand, more commonly known as Wits University, is the second largest university in South Africa that has its roots in the mining industry. Today, Wits is one of only two universities in Africa ranked in two separate international rankings as a leading institution in the world and is the only university in the country that features in the top 1% in the world in seven defined fields of research. The Faculty of Health Sciences offers professional degrees in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. With access to 5 major hospitals in Johannesburg, the newly established Wits Donald Gordon Medical Center and various clinics and rural hospitals, Wits offers students opportunities to learn about health care delivery in the fastest growing city and country in Africa.

Every effort is made to tailor international clerkship’s to the needs of each individual student. Students can undertake a clerkship in either one or two different academic/teaching hospitals in the department of their choice, including Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, General Medicine (with sub-specialties), Neurological Surgery, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics & Child Health, Radiology, Surgery, Trauma and Dental. The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, one of the hospitals students will have an option of working in, is the only hospital that provides services to the 3.5 million people living in Soweto, is the largest acute hospital in the world with, and delivers 17,000 babies every year (compared with 15-16,000 at Parkland in Dallas). Alternatively, there is a rural health care elective through the Emergency Medicine and Rural Health Departments, which is an elective requiring a minimum of 6 weeks.
