Program Description:
The Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bangalore was established in 1980 and is a globally recognized institution for higher education in the medical sciences. Under this 3 week international elective, students will have the opportunity to rotate through both the Internal and Community Medicine Departments to get hands-on experience in directly delivering health care in India’s third most populous city. Students will be paired with a fourth year medical student from India, who will be responsible for providing cultural, linguistic and contextual support and education while on site.

During the first two weeks of this elective, each student will rotate through the Internal Medicine Department. They will be responsible for taking patients’ histories and conducting the physical exams, with the Indian medical student translating and assisting where necessary. Each student will then be responsible for presenting their cases to faculty, again with the support of their Indian ‘buddy’. While in this department, students will see patients in both in-patient and out-patient settings in the morning and then attend didactics in the afternoon. For the third week, students will rotate through the Community Medicine Department. Here, students will have a unique opportunity to provide health services in a rural setting through mobile health vans and home visits. In addition to clinical work during the 1 week with Community Medicine, students will be exposed and have an opportunity to engage with national programs such Polio eradication, health surveys, family studies, and health education activities. During this time they will have a chance to interact closely with community and primary care health workers in rural areas.
