Community Service Learning - INTD 4007
The Community Service Learning Elective is an interdisciplinary longitudinal course for fourth-year medical students that will provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge about community service learning, participate in service to the community through developing and conducting a community service learning project with the guidance of a mentor, present their results at a conference poster session, and reflect on all of these experiences as part of the learning process. This is an online course with one mandatory in-class meeting.
- Learning Modules: Student will review eight (8) online learning modules with information relevant to community service learning. Most modules will consist of a PowerPoint presentation, reading, and an assignment on the Discussion Board.
- Discussion Board: Student will participate in an online discussion about community service learning, answering questions related to module materials and self-reflection of community service learning experience.
- Service Learning Quiz: Student will complete a quiz at the end of the course that covers all seven leaning modules.
- Reflection Journal: Student will submit a journal that reflects his or her thoughts about community service learning, including personal experience and lessons learned, to faculty once a month.
- Community Service Learning Experience: Student will select a Mentor and participate in forty (40) hours of community service learning at a self-selected site. Student will complete CSL Project Plan before beginning project and complete documentation record of hours at the end of the project.
- Absatract/Poster of CSL Project: Student will write an abstract and design a poster of their CSL experience and submit it to the Multimedia Department by the deadline. Student must meet with CSL Coordinator to receive guidance on the Poster.
- Presentation of Poster: Student will present Poster at the annual UTHSCSA CSL Conference.
Students must register for the CSL online elective by September 1, 2010. Submit an add/drop form to csl@uthscsa.edu or to Stephanie De La Vega at the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics, Annex building room N203.
