Conversations About Ethics: The 8th in a Series of Ethics Discussions

Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics Panel

Conversations About Ethics is a series of lectures and discussions about ethical issues presented by the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics and the Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health through the generous support of Methodist Healthcare Ministries.

Previous workshops and lectures have dealt with myriad ethical issues: stem cells and new technologies, the relationship between parents and children, mind-body medicine, religious and secular views on suffering, the physiological and psychological effects of stress and the moral imperative to make societal changes.

This year’s workshop and panel presentation will catalyze constructive, public conversation about healthcare access, outcomes and disparities in San Antonio. The discussion will explore unfilled health care needs as well as root causes that contribute to inequalities (including poverty, underinsurance, low health literacy, language, cultural factors and transportation), which in turn lead to poor health.

As a result of this conversation, participating community leaders and health professionals will be better prepared to work together to effect positive changes to policy, environment, lifestyle and community for improving the health of all San Antonio’s residents. The consequences of inaction in a city described recently in the New York Times as “a progressive, economically vibrant city of 1.3 million” compel this discussion.

Prior to the panel presentation, a related workshop will be presented: “An Intercultural Perspective on Aspirational Ethics to Promote Inclusive Care” by Esteban Montilla, PhD, LPC, Licensed Professional Counselor & Pastoral Educator, will take place from Noon to 4 p.m. at the Ecumenical Center for Religion & Health, 8310 Ewing Halsell, San Antonio. The workshop is available by reservation only and seating will be limited.

Following this workshop, participants are invited to attend the evening presentation titled “Moving Toward a Healthy Community: Health Disparities and Mending the Gaps in Bexar County.” The 5 to 7 p.m. Panel Discussion and Community-Wide Conversation will be followed by a 7 p.m. Reception at UT Health Science Center Holly Auditorium, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio.

The panel discussion with feature Senator Leticia Van de Putte and other leaders for the health of Bexar County.
